Tell me if THIS sounds familiar.  The way you find auto crash patients is, to run around to all of the different PI attorneys in town, hat in hand, begging and pleading for them to send their cases to your office?

Oh, sure, some of the old-timers in practice management try to dress it up a little bit more nicely than all of that.  They’ll claim to train you in some sort of secret Jedi auto crash reconstruction course, or some similar nonsense, that will make your CV sooooo very impressive that the PI attorneys will immediately line up around the block, begging you to be their “Expert” that quarterbacks all of their cases.

Yeah, right.  I’ve heard that old chestnut so many times… strike that.  I’ve FALLEN for that old chestnut so many times, it’s ridiculous.  I’ve got all of those super-certifications, went through all of those courses, and when I went to meet with the attorneys to show off just how snazzy of an expert I was….

… they did not give a single damn about any of it.  And that was IF I could get in the door to talk to them.

Listen.  I hate to have to burst anybody’s fantasies about building up an amazing PI business by educating yourself into such a super-chiropractor that the attorneys can’t help but send you patients.  I bought into that baloney lock, stock, and barrel, because that’s what I WANTED to be true.  I WANTED that model to work so badly that I spent thousands of dollars trying to make it come true.

…and here’s why the Old Timey version just does not work.



The harsh truth is, attorneys don’t use chiropractors as experts.  Oh, make no mistake- they expect you to know your stuff.  They expect professional care, they expect good exams, good use of advanced imaging, and a report that lays it all out in plain sight. 

But that is all basic stuff that you don’t need any advanced courses to work out.  And if you think that attorneys are going to be impressed with some “Super report” with tons of footnotes, or that they will care that you swear that you can be a great witness in court to take on the insurance company’s orthopedic surgeon expert…

…sorry, Charlie.  Like I said, I wanted that to be true, but it just isn’t.  If an attorney wants an expert for court (which is rare, 99% of cases settle over the phone), they want an MD…  an orthopedic surgeon, preferably.  I’m not saying that it’s right.  I’m saying that’s how it is.  So please, stop chasing that dream of having a super-CV that blows the PI attorneys away.  I made that mistake for a lot of years, and lost a ton of time and money in the process.

Here’s something a lot of you already know, or are starting to figure out (with a lot of frustration along the way):  everybody is beating down the doors of PI attorneys, trying to get their referrals.  And, the attorneys know it… and use it against us.

For those if you out there who have seen a couple of referrals from these attorneys, you know what I’m talking about.  They’ll send you lousy cases- patients with their benefits already exhausted, or patients that you seriously suspect aren’t really injured at all.  And they’ll ask you to cut your fees (which is personally insulting as well as financially awful).  And on top of all that, they’ll expect to push you around and dictate how care goes (“Hey Doc, we really need an EMG on this guy, even though there’s no radiating symptoms…”).

It’s enough to make you crazy and just plain give up in frustration.  But I don’t want to see that happen to you.  If your office going to survive, you’re going to need at least some auto injury patients.  So you need to ask yourself…
